12 Rules for Stimulating the Brain
Exercise boosts brain power
The brain evolved over time for survival
Every brain is wired differently
The brain doesn’t pay attention to boring things
Repeat to remember (short-term memory)
Remember to repeat (long-term memory)
Sleep well to learn well
Stressed brains don’t learn the same way
Stimulating more of the senses allows better learning (sensory integration)
Vision trumps all other senses
Male and female brains are different
The brain is a natural explorer
The survival rule - Introductions are important for us to ‘survive’; we have a natural desire t build relationships. Team activities encourage collaboration and cooperation. (Have to ensure that no one leader dominates.)
The boring rule - we don’t pay attention to boring things. They send us to sleep. Our attention drops after every 10 minutes unless we are given a fresh stimulation.
The stress rule - Stressed brains don’t learn the same way. Our “fight-or-flight” syndrome kicks in, and we resort to unconscious behaviors that we have previously learned. Examples of stress include embarrassment “loss of face”, etc.
The sensory integration rule - We learn best if we simulate several senses at once. Make sure to use more than a single voice. Since vision trumps all other senses, be sure to use interesting visuals in all learning content.
The exploration rule - We are powerful and natural explorers. Bring out our natural curiosity. We learn by ‘mirroring’ others. Discovery brings joy.
